Welcome, New Year 2026! Twelve fresh months stretch out in front of us. What shall we create?
Does this feel daunting or exciting? Or both? (For me, it’s both!)
During the last week of December, I unexpectedly discovered the Ultimate Blog Challenge website. (I’ll save that story for another post.) Since developing my daily writing practice has been on my mind for the past few years, I’m hopping onto this wave of opportunity to join with other writers. (Thank you, and hello!)
So this is officially Post #1 of 31. And since I love short form writing and the concept of personal kaizen, I’m beginning with a senryu (American-style rules, very forgiving form of haiku):

Can I change the world?

Yes, Happy New Year! Sunryu is new to me. I like the idea that it includes more general (even abstract)topics, while haiku has nature-themed elements. Very interesting!
I’m fairly new to senryu, too. I was writing 5-7-5 patterned poems about philosophical themes for a couple of years, all the while calling them haiku, until I learned about the difference. Japanese poetry is a much bigger topic than I imagined, and I’m still very much a beginner. But I love the varieties of short forms! https://www.tofugu.com/japan/japanese-poetry-crash-course/
Hello. it is a pleasure to meet you. I’ve been here several times but always love coming back although a lot of times I don’t finish the challenge, but I give it my all. Have a wonderful New Year and if I can help with anything let me know.
Nice to meet you, too! And thanks for the encouragement and support!
